- N.W.A.: Straight Outta Compton, released august 1988, the first gangsta-rap record with commercial appeal
- De La Soul: 3 Feet High and Rising, released in Europe in august 1988, a bit later in the USA, the start of alternative hiphop. Also courtcase related to sampling: sued by the Turtles – lost – sampling requires payment.
