New knowledge for all – the good society

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

A scientist or researcher finds out about reality and what is true. Knowledge is advancing all the time, but the general public has difficulty in knowing how far we have progressed and what is true. New knowledge must be popularized, made public, accepted by the public and understood by the public to be of use.

Original knowledge is found all the time – it must be made public all the time.

The knowledge of the world is accumulating ever faster. We find out how things work and develop, we know about the details and the larger systems. Life sciences are growing fast so that we know more and more about networks, interconnectedness and holistic systems.

Genomics, metabolomics and all the other -omics are developing fast, nanotech is there, history is better understood, the understanding of the human brain is advancing, climate models are becoming more and more complete.

Researchers, technologists and experts of all kinds know their subjects fairly well, although incompletely. This knowledge must be made public in step with advancing knowledge.

This has traditionally been done through schools, books, the popular media.

A broad lack of understanding of new developments seems to be developing in society now – we don’t know what is going on any more – that is for the experts. Use of strategic information control to serve given interests are another dangerous factor. The politicians are like the general public – they follow the experts.

This must be changed. Knowledge must be popularized and spread more evenly or society will lose.

A big challenge is to make people interested in knowledge and able to understand it too. Societies will become unbalanced, undemocratic, ridden by special interests – lobbyists -  if we do not achieve better knowledge distribution.

We need new ways in the form of new thinking and institutions to educate the general public. Public schools, universities can do it, good writers can do it. Intellectuals used to be important too – where have they gone?

Everyone of us must be looking for a solution for broad development and distribution of knowledge – it is deeply seen about making a good society for all, and necessary too. Knowledge must be understandable, distributed, transparent, with a known source, real. Enlightenment is what follows.

We need good journalists

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Journalists have made and uncovered many dramatic stories through the ages: Traditional news to tell us what is (really) going on, clever and insightful commentary, pure info and revealing the truth, digging out crimes and cover-ups and many more, all investigative and independent.

Journalists have lost faith in themselves lately, and they have lost their independence, and financing too. Good old fashioned journalism where the original truth is shown is now rare as the complexity of the world has been increasing. This is not satisfactory. We need independent, courageous quality journalism. Society often needs a qualified voice to balance views, to ferret out hidden views, to show deceit. Deeply seen this has to do with how society works – are things correct, legal, transparent.

The old business models based on advertising has fallen. New ones are needed. It will take time to find these. New media are materializing.

Journalists should find and write about lack of wisdom, lack of courage and coherence, criminal activity, find new coherences, see developments and trends, possibilities, start us thinking.

They must work in institutions with independence, capacity of men/women and intelligence, long term thinking so that they can find genuine news and challenge misdeeds or bad thinking and doing, do follow-up work long term. This is needed on a local level, nationally and internationally.

So in the name of a truly good society we need journalists that can see what is right and tell us about it. We need people and institutions and we must be willing to pay for these services.

Do your bit by showing preference for media like this and pay some where you find it.

Intangibles of the world: our cultural heritage must live

Monday, April 26th, 2010

All over the world there are ways of doing things that should not be lost. The UNESCO is doing a great job in documenting and taking care of these intangibles all over the world. They have the Intangible Cultural Heritage project that is becoming a force to reckon with.

Our heritage is also about our future and the way we are going to live.

Our cultural heritage is found in all areas of life: languages, dances, tapestry, rites, calligraphy, lacemaking, ceremonies, rites, funerals, narratives, etc.

This project is a great way to take care of valuable expressions and customs and make the world a richer place.

Mass media, globalisation and a common culture have slowly been putting pressure on this heritage.

The world is rich, varied and local and should continue to be so.

So what do you do? Follow the customs of your area, start playing an instrument, do some dancing, make some handiwork, start telling stories or something else that you fancy. Both you and the society you are part of will benefit.

Positive peer to peer

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

The Norwegian state broadcasting company is using bittorrent technology to distribute free TV programs – mostly the big ones so that they can save bandwidth. They explain the technology – how to do it – so that even your grandmother can understand it – as well.

They are not making money from it, but technically it works fine – customers are satisfied it seems.

See link: NRK Beta

The discussion around it is positive – and what else can we use bittorrent for – suggestions are forthcoming from users.

The commercial world should try this approach as well. Long term thinking combined with innovation may lead to value for your customers – and you learn the technicalities and thinking of the new world. Pulling your customers into courts is very alienating.

Other broadcasters are looking into bittorrent too – there is movement.

So all you film, record companies of the world – get the bittorrent feeling – try it. It is coming your way now. Giving away free combined with paid services may make a strong team if you are clever! Start by setting up bittorrent for your advertising and demos – and some old stuff?

Build some value for your customers in the process?

Climate models – progress

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

An article in Science magazine says that water vapour in the atmosphere has significant effect on the temperature on Earth. Recent reduced levels of water vapour has reduced the temperature measured – but we do not understand these mechanisms fully.  We need time series of data on this effect, and we need to correlate this to other factors of the climate models.

The tropics seems to be the source of water for these vapours.

The knowledge of climate models is going forward – good.

Careful now IPCC: Get your facts and science right before you conclude – we don’t want data fitted to a new truth.

Get out of the news stream!

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

News are presented as a continuous stream: Breakthroughs of science, political action, incidents – it goes on and on. The way it is done is peculiar as it is always out of context, no explanation, no follow up, often fictional to hide or slant what is going on, often political test-balloons, lots of detail utterly without interest. News stories are full of strangeness, new “inventions”, frightening tendencies.

We lose track of what is going on – what the real issues are and how they develop.

Why is it so? Is there a conscious willed activity going on? Bedazzle them and they will be mellow?

How can you be well informed – find the truth?

The first thing to do is to sabotage the media completely. Find your own issues through books, writings, the net, talks – make your own reality. A new world will open up – you will know, you will be sure, you will not worry needlessly, you can sleep at night.

All research is paid for by someone with an agenda, choices are made for you, spin doctors work around the clock around the globe, data are altered and arranged, records are bent and fiddled with, mock-ups are made, media houses and their journalists are paid by someone with an interest, incidents are covered up, lobbying is rife, myths are built, dirt-packages abound. Many important issues never show up in the news anyway.

Stop consuming news – your mind can be disturbed, the hidden persuaders are at work.

What you need will be evident in due course. Important agendas emerge if needed, true history can only be written after a time, when personal agendas are gone, data can be found, ideas and mindsets are in proper perspective, controls can be performed. So don’t take in the news – the information you need will emerge.

The ethics of all this is horrible – refuse to be part of it.

Stop yourself and you will be better off for it. Think, find out, be independent, make your own choices. The knot in your stomach will disappear.

This situation is not sustainable – old media will die  and the survivors and new media will be transparent, relevant, true.

Twist the truth?

Breakthrough for Bollywood in the West

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

American films are it – or so far they have been. But now things are changing – maybe. There have been many Eastern/Indian films in the West – perhaps best known lately is “Slumdog Millionaire”.

Now a new movie – big movie – called “My name is Khan” is coming to Berlin and the rest of us. Action, a controlled plot and suspense is not important here – the story is driven by fate or something like that. Nature, music, sweetness and Shah Rukh Khan is the star. Muslim and hindu cultures are part of the production. More will follow – changes are afoot – Bollywood is joining Hollywood on the world stage.

Also take into account Nollywood which is the Nigerian filmindustry’s called name in Lagos. They produce in English, on DVD, and they make about 200 movies per month about love, revenge, politics. Coming to a place near you soon?

When will Chollywood (Chinese) emerge?

New horizons are opening up – good!

Green business bubble or is it just a sad day?

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Among intensifying speculation that human CO2 is not contributing to global warming the world’s top ‘climate-change official” Pachauri of the IPCC is in focus. His business interests are described in an article in the Telegraph UK.

see article Telegraph UK

Read it and see for yourself – this is big business, big government, big UN, big EU, big men all: Carbon trading and sustainable technologies in a climate industry.

Do we have a scandal here? Good work Telegraph!

Digitalizing content rights

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

We live in a converging world. Media are moving one way: content will be digitized!  Films, pictures, books, music, games have all gone digital on the web and can be taken down to your computer or other device via the internet or mobile lines. Many people do this now. Efficient techniques like broadband, bittorrent  technology makes it possible to find content, often free of charge or some say by stealing it.

There is a growing force to see to it that owners of content get paid, although many business models provide part of content for free. Many free sites exist.

The digital force is with us and we must find good legal solutions to cope with the digital future. Old fashioned laws must be taken into the digital age both nationally and internationally. International conventions etc. often dictate what nations do.

So what is a right approach? Many simple questions come up: Can we take part in file-sharing privately or for business purposes, can you play something off the internett without downloading it, can you share files with your friends and if so how many times, must customers check where files originate, what responsibilities have publishers in assuring their own rights, who owns copies made, does it matter where you store the files, use of links to files with a known owner, what can you print and distribute, the influence of ever new technology, what can be performed publicly, what is fair use or do we replace that with new concepts, allowing search engines to search your content,….

We must also be practical: Can we stop what everybody does, what control mechanisms are there, can new technology aid the management of rights (DRM),

We have to start softly and develop our thinking and practice – it takes time to develop maturity.

This also has to do with new business models, new products, use of new technology, innovative thinking, fair pricing and customer satisfaction. As a foundation we need a right law!

And why not use bittorrent techniques in a fully legalized setting? Think about it.

Media – getting back to itself – in new armour

Monday, December 7th, 2009

Media houses, especially newspapers and TV-channels, are finding it hard to survive in the web-world.  The net has changed the way we do things and more changes are coming via the many writers – bloggers – aggregators that are sprouting.  Anybody can comment – it hardly costs a thing to start – and the amount of information and commentary is already huge. Many of the new channels are now quite good.

But big fixed costs like printing presses, staff are difficult to sustain. New business models are required – the economics of providing information and news is being reinvented.

An independent press has been the ideal for a long time – to give correct information, to balance the forces in a society, to be a watchdog.  At the moment the big question for the old media seems to be survival – nobody seems to be willing to pay them for news and commentary, and advertising is not giving enough income.

At the same time it can be said that the new media are technically oriented, but not very conscious about its role in society. The new technology is truly awesome – it provides vastly improved possibilities.

Apart from technology and business models there is the question of the public availability of information. Public debate is a prerequisite for a sound society. The old media has been taking this job seriously, and in the new world there is a real danger that the flow of information will change. The access can possibly be controlled by “someone”: the state, the “rich”, the organizers of scams, the lobbyists, the spinners, the marketeers (the mad people).

The conspiracy people are now busy telling the world what goes on, and this is probably a good thing.

But surely people are willing to pay for independent news, commentary, good editing. Public openness must be part of our future – transparency, critical journalism, boldness, journalistic depth, digging out information, perspectives.

The new media is surely arising – but we must also get rid of the old media that we don’t need.
